bikeshed
From NetBSD Wiki
A bikeshed discussion is a discussion that's about something so trivial everyone can form an opinion about it. This kind of discussion happens when core (or any other developer) asks the community for their opinion on something that doesn't even matter that much. In most cases, the developer in question should've made the decision without asking others.
Bikeshed-like discussions on NetBSD mailinglists were (among others) the ones about the new NetBSD logo, BSD Auth vs PAM (more needed, preferably with link to threaded viewer)
Typical for these discussions is that no final decision can be reached easily on which everyone agrees. The discussions often end up in very heated debates, most likely because they are about highly subjective choices. Usually, none of the alternatives are superior, be it technically or according to some other objective measurement.
