How should xdm be activated?

After freshly having installed all sets except the x*-ones, there is an init script /etc/rc.d/xdm (and other artefacts of XFree, mostly empty directories). This is a bit confusing.

I'v re-build.sh-t src without -x hoping that these relicts of Xfree will vanish then. They did not.

Any other hint on the cleanest way to set up xorg's xdm might save lots of experiments...
